I first became involved with SAAcro in the Fall of 2016. I had the weekend off from theater rehearsals and my family decided to visit the weekly Farmer’s Market at the Pearl Brewery. We browsed the different stands and sampled everything we could, and then we passed a small, grassy lot between Local Coffee and Bakery Lorraine. A few people appeared to be doing yoga… balanced on top of each other’s feet.
At 15 years old, I was absolutely amazed at the way these people synced up with each other, sometimes without using any words. Now, four years later, I have met many acro-yogis whom I am so grateful to call my friends. Through acro-yoga, I have learned self-love, confidence, and how to trust myself and others. I have learned how to prevent myself from getting too anxious while pulling off a difficult pose or transition; a technique that I have also applied to my everyday life. During our “jam sessions”, I am able to let go of my worries and simply enjoy the time I spend with the other yogis there.
Strength and flexibility are not required to participate in acro-yoga. Everyone, regardless of age or size, is welcome! Free jam sessions are held on the Pearl Brewery lawn on Sundays beginning at 4:30 pm, depending on the weather. Different classes and jams are also available. And if you ever see us flying around, don’t be afraid to ask if you can join in on the fun!
