By definition, a “luminary” can be a person who inspires others or some kind of body of light, be it natural or artificial. Because we live in a community that is predominantly Hispanic/Latino, we call it Luminaria. This event illuminates the night skies by showcasing some beautiful artwork from local San Antonians, so check it out!
Originally founded in 2008 by former Mayor Phil Hardberger and his group of volunteers, this event has been happening for the past 8 years. In an excerpt taken from the Huffington Post, The President of Washington College, Dr. Mitchell B. Reiss, was once quoted saying, “Great literature, films and visual art transport us to different places and cultures; great art even allows us to see ourselves and our own community through a different lens.”
Hemisfair Park is located at the heart of San Antonio and has been home to Luminaria since 2011. Showcasing many different artists’ work and hosting some great performers has helped to establish Luminaria as the go-to event that illuminates our historic downtown as a reimagined creative space.
From artists featuring original artwork all the way to live performances by musicians such as Cadillac Muzik to Musica Volcan, Luminaria did not disappoint and I will definitely be returning in 2019! Come and check out Luminaria if you are in town and help keep our city “illuminated”….See what I did there?
