I like to eat like a local when I travel so I’ve created a couple of posts as a guide for anyone else who really enjoys immersing themselves in the local community when they are visiting a new place.
Located on the East Side of San Antonio, at 1747 S WW White Rd, Chatman’s Chicken is a go-to spot for anyone who considers themselves a connoisseur of fried chicken. A friend of mine and I were trying to decide where to go for lunch and she mentioned the East Side of town, so Chatman’s Chicken immediately came to mind.
I found out about Chatman’s Chicken because they sponsored a bowling team in the same league I bowled in. Other bowlers were already familiar and highly recommended it.
Aside from the building being a bright yellow, the restaurant isn’t flashy, but at any given time you’ll find a stream of people coming through. One of my favorite things to order is the white meat fried chicken plate. It’s a lot of food, so come hungry. I get it with mashed potatoes and corn fritters. I also got an order of the fried riblets. That order alone is enough for two, maybe three people! My friend got the chicken and waffles which is a new addition to the menu.
The staff is always friendly and happy to show off their product. If you’re in a hurry, there’s a drive-through. I hope you’ll give this local gem a chance! There’s no website, but you can check Chatman’s Chicken on Yelp for reviews!
