I spent a weekend in September near Leakey, Texas at the H-E-B Foundation Camp with Big Brothers Big Sisters. I couldn’t believe this was my sixth year attending. Troy, my Little, and I usually spend our car ride home planning what we would like to do the following year. What he and I enjoy at camp is different. He loves connecting with other Little brothers on the basketball court while I enjoy the hikes.
We arrived on Friday with the hopes we would avoid the rain, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. However, we went directly to the Blue Hole because the friends who were riding with us had never been. Driving to the Blue Hole is an adventure because we must drive through shallow water to get there. I took an SUV, but I have seen cars make the drive.
We made our way back to camp where Troy went immediately to the basketball court with his new friend, TJ. The two had smack-talked each other the whole way there and were anxious to prove themselves out on the court. I went into the dining hall to connect with other Bigs; some whom I’d not seen since last year’s camp-out.
It rained heavily on and off for the rest of the weekend, but this didn’t deter us from having a good time. We played games, fished, canoed, kayaked, hiked and swam. I always appreciate the opportunity to get away. We have no cell reception, no televisions, but no one complains. We’re always too busy enjoying our time together.
